Rota-Ear: Restoring the Gift of Hearing
Rota-Ear is one of the signature service projects of the Rotary Club of Baguio South, created to help individuals with hearing difficulties regain not only the ability to hear, but also the confidence to communicate, learn, connect, and participate more fully in their communities.
Through Rota-Ear, the Rotary Club of Baguio South brings together the expertise of medical professionals, generous partners, donors, volunteers, and Rotarians to provide hearing assessment and appropriate hearing assistance to qualified beneficiaries who may otherwise have limited access to these essential services.
The project is led by Dr. Carlene Erica Rossi, who oversees the medical and clinical aspects of the initiative, ensuring that beneficiaries receive proper assessment and appropriate guidance throughout the process.
The implementation begins with the identification and screening of beneficiaries, followed by professional hearing assessment. Based on the results, appropriate hearing assistance is determined and fitted to the needs of each beneficiary. The process is complemented by guidance on the proper use and care of the hearing device, helping beneficiaries make the most of this life-changing intervention.
A significant milestone for Rota-Ear was the generous donation of the first 20 hearing aids from a partner donor company, allowing the project to begin reaching individuals who need hearing assistance.
More than providing a device, Rota-Ear seeks to open doors—to conversations, education, relationships, opportunities, and a greater sense of inclusion.
For the Rotary Club of Baguio South, this project embodies the spirit of Service Above Self: bringing people together and turning compassion into meaningful, lasting action.
Rota-Ear — because everyone deserves the opportunity to hear, to connect, and to be heard.
Shunt for Life: Giving Children a Chance to Live, Learn, and Thrive
Shunt for Life is a flagship service project of the Rotary Club of Baguio South, dedicated to helping children and individuals suffering from hydrocephalus access the life-saving neurosurgical treatment they need.
Hydrocephalus is a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain, potentially causing increased pressure and serious neurological complications. For families who face financial hardship, the cost of diagnosis, surgery, hospitalization, and follow-up care can be overwhelming. Through Shunt for Life, the Rotary Club of Baguio South seeks to help bridge this gap and provide qualified beneficiaries with access to essential neurosurgical care.
The project is led by Neurosurgeon Dr. Lauro San Jose, who is also a proud member of the Rotary Club of Baguio South. His medical expertise, dedication to patient care, and commitment to Service Above Self are at the heart of the project. As both a medical professional and a Rotarian, Dr. San Jose brings together his vocation and his commitment to community service to help give beneficiaries a chance at a healthier future.
The journey begins with the identification and medical assessment of patients who may benefit from the program. Once a beneficiary is evaluated and qualified for intervention, the necessary preparations are undertaken for surgery. The medical team then performs the appropriate shunt procedure to help redirect excess cerebrospinal fluid and relieve pressure within the brain. Post-operative care and monitoring form an important part of the process, supporting the patient’s recovery and continued well-being.
Behind every procedure is a child, a patient, and a family hoping for a better future. Shunt for Life is more than a medical mission—it is an expression of compassion, collaboration, and service that seeks to give beneficiaries the opportunity to grow, learn, develop, and experience life with greater possibilities.
Through the generosity of donors and partners, the expertise of medical professionals, and the dedication of Rotarians and volunteers, the Rotary Club of Baguio South transforms the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self into meaningful action.
This video documents the implementation of Shunt for Life—showing how a community can come together to make a profound difference in the lives of families.
Shunt for Life — because every child deserves a chance at life, a chance to grow, and a chance to thrive.

Share A Meal Project

The Rotary Club of Baguio South continues its commitment to service by sharing meals to indigent children in Quisumbing Street, Trancoville Baguio City. With the covid pandemic still posing as a threat to our community, it is challenging for the club to do feeding programs. However, we need to be resilient and find ways to still fulfill maternal and child health projects thus the Share A Meal Project. To adhereto health protocol standards, we gave pre-packed meals to indigent children in the specified area. This project is in partnership with The Good News Community Church, Good news Student Center PH170.
