Club History

In the summer of 1982 five young men were selected to form the “core group” to lay down ground preparations for what was to become the 3rd Rotary Club in Baguio City. Engr. Jesus “Jess” Tabora, then District Governor of D-380 appointed RC Baguio President, Juan “Johnny” Zarate, as District Group Representative (DGSR). PP Johnny pushed for the formation of another club in Baguio to support the desire of the members of the Baguio community to serve as Rotarians.

The formation of the 3rd club had it’s challenges at first, but PP Johnny got the imprimatur of the Mother Club (RC Baguio) through a resolution effecting the immediate “corner stone laying” of a new Club. At that time 5 young men were selected to be the “core group” to lay down the ground preparations for the new club’s pilot activities. These 5 core members were Alex Aquino (who eventually became the the Charter President), Del Claravall (who became the charter secretary), Edny Golayan, Del Balajadia and Rae David.

Over 100 professionals and businessmen expressed their desire to join the new club. Meetings ensued and prospective members were screened and were reduced to 60 on April 23, 1982.On April 30 of the same year, the first orientation and organization meeting was held with the prospective members to enrich them on what Rotary was all about.

On May 14, 1982, the first 45 members were formally introduced to the Rotary Clubs of Baguio and Rotary Club of Baguio North at the former Resort Pines Hotel. On August 20, 1982 the Charter Presentation and Induction of Officers was held at the former Hyatt Terraces Hotel with former US Ambassador to the Philippines, Michael Armacost as the Guest of Honor and Speaker.

And finally on June 23, 1982, Rotary International approved the Charter of The Rotary Club of Baguio South. Since 1982 The Rotary Club of Baguio South has been dedicated to serving it’s community and continues to do so for 39 years and counting.
